Well fuck, if it’s anything serious at all then this month just got alot harder. Of all the times for his innings from the last several years to catch up to him this isn’t a very good one.

Probably won’t hear anything until at least when Lou is available to the press, which is what, a couple of hours before the game?

Hearing any earlier would require a reporter doing some digging, and I think we all know that’s not gonna happen.

8. pmayo — Sep 03, 2008 @ 05:23 AM

I’ll keep everyone up to date on Z, as much as I can.

There’s really no good reason not go get Burnett. Like, now.

9. — Sep 03, 2008 @ 05:27 AM

i think the waiver deadline is over mayo

10. — Sep 03, 2008 @ 05:29 AM

Did Burnett clear waivers? Because he would actually have to for the Cubs to be able to trade for him, since the Cubs would have the very last waiver priority on him.

11. pmayo — Sep 03, 2008 @ 05:33 AM

Right, DJ. I had forgotten about the August 31 roster deal. Man, if Z is out for an extended period of time, the Cubs are in a world of shit.

12. — Sep 03, 2008 @ 05:34 AM

Wait, can you make trades after August 31 or not? Because if you can, and Zambrano is too hurt to make the playoffs, the Cubs could 60-day DL him and put any pitcher they have under contract on the playoff roster in his place.

13. — Sep 03, 2008 @ 05:36 AM

I think the Astros are actually pretty solid, they just need another front line pitcher and a healthy Oswalt. I wouldn’t be shocked if they are a major player for CC in the offseason. That lineup, even minus Lee, is pretty solid and with Lee it is brutal.

No matter what Z’s issue is, they need to rest him for a couple starts. Even with a tough Sept. and no Zambrano, the Cubs should still make the postseason. Just make sure that big bastard is healthy in October.

14. — Sep 03, 2008 @ 05:36 AM

for once my gut is telling me Z isnt going to come right back from this. With the arm acting up earlier this year and now this after a month of ineffective pitching and declining K rates I think Z might be missing some decent time

15. — Sep 03, 2008 @ 05:38 AM

no trades anymore vlad-

the only good thing is that we have a power pen that can really shorten a game in the playoffs- right now starting in the 7th you have Spellcheck, Marmol and Wood. If Guzman is throwing 95 or so like he was last night then you can use Cotts/Guzman in the 6th.

16. pmayo — Sep 03, 2008 @ 05:38 AM

Vlad, any player added to the roster after August 31 is ineligible for the playoff roster.

17. — Sep 03, 2008 @ 05:53 AM

pmayo, that’s not true. You can replace players who were on the roster but go on the 60-day DL with any player at the same position in your organization, even if they weren’t on the roster before August 31.

18. pmayo — Sep 03, 2008 @ 05:55 AM

vlad, I thnk that player would have to be in your organization already, though. You can’t trade for a guy and then 60-day DL someone to make room.

From MLB.com’s waiver trade FAQ:

So there is no final deadline for trades?

No. But the real deadline for summer trades is Aug. 31 at midnight ET. After that day, any player added to a Major League roster will not be eligible for the postseason.

19. — Sep 03, 2008 @ 05:57 AM

I can’t find the rule either way, although I thought I remembered some team using the DL rule to get around the trading deadline a few years ago. I may be confusing that with Francisco Rodriguez being a sept. callup and then pitching in the playoffs, though.

20. ccd — Sep 03, 2008 @ 05:58 AM

as much as I like Z, the reality is he’s not much help to this club when he has starts like lastnight and several of the ones prior to that. He has not been going deep into ballgames and he’s walking too many people. I almost hope that they do find a minor injury that can get better with a few weeks of rest. Otherwise what the hell is the problem?

At this point I actually think Sean Marshall is a better option for this team than the Z we have seen of late.

21. pmayo — Sep 03, 2008 @ 06:01 AM

The F-Rod thing was a bit odd, vlad, but he was already in the Angels’ org.

22. — Sep 03, 2008 @ 06:06 AM

Wait, can you make trades after August 31 or not? Because if you can, and Zambrano is too hurt to make the playoffs, the Cubs could 60-day DL him and put any pitcher they have under contract on the playoff roster in his place.

You can make trades after August 31st, and you can replace a guy that goes to the 60-day DL with someone else for the playoffs, but you can only replace him with someone that was a part of your organization on the 31st. So we could trade for Burnett and have him pitch the rest of August, but that wouldn’t help in the playoffs. They could add another pitcher that’s already in the organization (say, Veal if Marhsall moves to the rotation) to replace Z on the playoff roster. but i doubt they’d do that, as they’re more likely to just put Hart, Wuertz, or Guzman in the pen for the playoffs.

btw… shit.

23. — Sep 03, 2008 @ 06:08 AM

Agreed, but lets not pretend that overall this is a good thing. We need a healthy Z in the playoffs. You’re right - Marshall is better than a damaged Zambrano… but he doesn’t hold a candle to the healthy version.

Maybe they should just have him prep to be the DH in the WS?

24. — Sep 03, 2008 @ 06:13 AM

maybe its the fact that its gray and gloomy here in KS but right now im thinking best case is Z is shut down until October and the more likely is that Z is toast

I’m not pretending at all that this is good. But as they say it is what it is.

Pretty sure most instances of arm soreness in pitchers don’t result in them being toast. Probably even if they’ve had a muscle strain earlier in the season. Be concerned, sure, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Let’s not jump off the fence on this just yet. It could just be he gets a few weeks of rest and comes back ready to go.

28. — Sep 03, 2008 @ 06:22 AM

There’s one thing about this that pisses me off:

If he was hurt, he shouldn’t have pitched yesterday and should have been placed on the 15-day DL before Sept. 1st so the team could have called up one more guy, making him playoff eligible. The fact that they didn’t do this is pretty irritating, considering there are options down there (Pie in particular) that i think should have been given playoff consideration.

29. — Sep 03, 2008 @ 06:22 AM

btw, Maddog put a new thread up.

I’ve gotta ride into work. I’ll stop by later to see what the status is on Z…

30. pmayo — Sep 03, 2008 @ 06:23 AM

I agree, Shawn. Pie’s omission from the callups is glaring. He’s not in this club’s plans and they’ve used this season to completely rid him of any trade value, by burning his last option year and then refusing to call him up for September.

31. ccd — Sep 03, 2008 @ 06:24 AM

Shawn, I follow your logic until the mention of Pie. Why would you even consider him for the postseason roster?
