Cubs win, Soriano is good at sports, packed with Cubs fans

Posted by Maddog on 09/06/08 at 06:16 PM • 108 Comments

The Cubs offense got off to another slow start and the game was tied at 0 after 2 innings.  That’s when Alfonso Soriano took over.  He hit a solo home run in the 3rd, the first of 3 on the night.  The Cubs added a run in the 4th, but Marquis gave it back.  Soriano added another solo home run in the 5th that put the Cubs up 3-0.  His next time up he hit a 3-run home run making it a 6-1 game.

None of his home runs were cheap.  The Cubs had 2 other home runs as well.  Mark DeRosa made it 9-1 in the 7th as he hit a line drive 3-run home run to CF.  Jason Marquis hit a line drive home run to RF in the 8th.

Speaking of Marquis, he didn’t have great control though from reading through the comments, it sounds as though the strikezone was pretty shitty tonight.  He pitched as well as he needed to and went into the 8th inning before being taken out for Jeff Samardzija.  Marquis final line was 7.1 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, and 2 K.  The Cubs led 11-1 at the time he was taken out.  Samardzija hit the first batter he faced, which moved an inherited runner up to 2nd.  Then he walked the next batter.  He then got Patterson to ground easily to 1st base, but Lee made an error and 2 runs scored (one charged to Marquis).  Then Paul Bako doubled home a couple other runs before Neal Cotts was brought into the game to get out of it.

The 11-1 lead became an 11-5 lead and the Cubs came to bat in the 9th inning.  They’d add 3 more runs and turn it over, you’d think for the night, to Michael Wuertz who just sucks.  Marmol was finally brought in after the bases were juiced and the first pitch he threw resulted in a grand slam.  14-9.  Corey Patterson would single that inning, but that was the rest of it.  The Cubs hung on to win 14-9.

The bats came alive in a big way.  Soriano was 4-5 with 5 RBI and Derrek Lee was 4-6 with 3 RBI.  The Cubs need more offense from Lee than they’d been getting and they need more from Aramis Ramirez as well.

Oh yeah, by the way, since a certain moron has told us that Koyie Hill is the greatest catcher on the planet and that CERA (Catcher’s ERA) is a good measure of their talent, and that small sample size is irrelevant and only an excuse for faggot statheads, this is interesting:  Hill’s CERA in 2008 is 12.00 and the other “fantastic” stat for catcher’s, Wild Pitches plus Passed Balls per game.  Hill’s WP+PB per game in 2008 is 1.5.

Great American Ballpark was packed with Cubs fans.  I’ve been to several games in Cincinnati and I don’t think there have ever been as many Cubs fans as tonight.

Marquis really stepped up last night. Good to see the offense come back to life, too.

The bullpen is becoming a concern.

2. Maddog — Sep 07, 2008 @ 03:24 AM

I think the bullpen will be OK once October starts and we stop seeing guys like Howry and Wuertz.

Marquis got as loud a standing ovation last night as I’ve seen any Cubs pitcher get on the road.  As you said, he really did step up and deliver in what was actually a pretty important game.  He also hammered 2 balls, one for the home run and one to fairly deep CF.

I’ve seen a lot of Cubs games on the road.  That’s mostly where i go to watch the Cubs anymore, but last night was something I’d never seen before.  We always park over in Newport (Kentucky) and get something to eat and then walk across the bridge to the park.  There are several bars overlooking the Ohio River and as we walked by these places, I really couldn’t believe it.  They were packed with Cubs fans.

I was here in Cincy the final series of the year last year when the Cubs clinched the division and there were more Cubs fans at last night’s game than any of those 3 games last year.  It was a home game.  It was like a Cubs/Cardinals game at Wrigley Field.  Almost all Cubs fans, but quite a few Reds fans to be heard.

While the fans in left field were bowing Soriano last night, if he doesn’t come through today they’ll be throwing shit at him.

Soriano is just strong.  I was able to see most of batting practice last night, which is something we usually don’t bother to get to the park to watch, but nobody on this team has the power Soriano has and it’s not even close.  Derrek Lee is probably right behind him based on BP followed by Daryle Ward (that man was hitting towering home runs in BP last night).  Then again, it’s BP and even Ryan Theriot hit a few out of the park.  (dying laughing)

3. Maddog — Sep 07, 2008 @ 03:26 AM

I guess the surprising part wasn’t that the places (bars, restaurants, etc.) were packed with Cubs fans, it’s that there were maybe only 3 or 4 Reds fans in each of these places.

4. pmayo — Sep 07, 2008 @ 03:30 AM

Soriano is a really strong guy. I can’t remember who it was, but last season, there was a Cub player being interviewed on the radio here and they were asked whom was the strongest player on the team. The reply: Soriano, by far. Apparently, he’s just a little bundle of muscle.

I lost faith in BP when I watched Mike Bielecki hit two HR in BP.

I hope you’re right about the bullpen. I’m not so confident. And as far as I’m concerned, Howry, Wuertz, and Lieber should be nowhere near a MLB team.

5. pmayo — Sep 07, 2008 @ 03:33 AM

MD, do you think it’s that Cub fans travel well, or that there are so many out of town fans? Maybe a bit of both?

6. — Sep 07, 2008 @ 03:57 AM

Agree Mayo, Howry, Lieber and Weurtz inspire zero confidence. Period, and good bye!

7. Maddog — Sep 07, 2008 @ 04:15 AM

This close to Chicago I think it’s a lot of fans traveling to see the team, but there are still a lot of Cubs fans in the area (within a couple hours of Cincy).  we’re staying at a hotel about 30 minutes from the park and there are at least 3 other families staying here that have been going to the game.  we stayed out here because it’s just a 5 minute drive from my aunt and uncle’s place, but I’d guess if the hotels out here have a few families going to the game that the ones even closer have a lot more.

I talked to a few people at the game last night and one group was from Chicago and had traveled and one was from Indiana and the other was from Cincy.  That’s probably a pretty good guess (one in 3).

anyway, off to the park and hopefully Sean Marshall will do what marquis did.

i don’t put much faith in BP either, but I do think you can learn something about someone’s strength.  If someone is hitting 500 foot bombs left and right, compared to another who can barely hit it 400, you’ve got something there.

8. ccd — Sep 07, 2008 @ 04:20 AM

pmayo, I think it was you or another poster who sometime back said something to the effect of: “Soriano was born to play leftfield for the Cubs”. I couldn’t help but think that as I was listening to the ballgame lastnight while driving home. He really signifies the Cubs in so many ways. As frustrating as he can be one night, the next night he can do things that are amazing. He was born to play left for the Cubs.

9. ccd — Sep 07, 2008 @ 04:21 AM

dear baseball gods, please tell me there is not a heart, journey and cheap trick ad running atop this page. I hope it’s just me having flashbacks to grade school.

10. HORNY GOAT — Sep 07, 2008 @ 06:53 AM

Hauffpauir batting 2nd today.

11. HORNY GOAT — Sep 07, 2008 @ 07:17 AM

Fuck! 1 more foot!

12. HORNY GOAT — Sep 07, 2008 @ 07:18 AM

OK, maybe 2-3 more feet. that ball really carried off Fonzie’s bat.

13. HORNY GOAT — Sep 07, 2008 @ 07:21 AM

Favre with a 56 yard TD pass? nice start.

14. HORNY GOAT — Sep 07, 2008 @ 07:45 AM

Oh shut up Len, that was a good throw, just an unfortunate hop. Not automatic for your precious Kosuke.

15. HORNY GOAT — Sep 07, 2008 @ 07:46 AM

I guarantee Al will mention it in his re-cap. If Kosuke would’ve been out there…

16. — Sep 07, 2008 @ 08:07 AM

I bet Fukudome would have struck out instead of singling there.

17. HORNY GOAT — Sep 07, 2008 @ 08:12 AM

Nice inning for the Brewers there.  Cards 2 Fish 1, btw

36. HORNY GOAT — Sep 07, 2008 @ 08:55 AM

Theriot is out. He patted himself on the back too hard and it locked up.

37. Harry Pavlidis — Sep 07, 2008 @ 08:57 AM

Brenly’s in the locker room right now walking on his back.  Tom Willis to Theriot’s George Jefferson, if you will.

40. Harry Pavlidis — Sep 07, 2008 @ 09:03 AM

I’d like the Cubs to cash in on the lead-off man getting on board, get Marshall the W.

41. HORNY GOAT — Sep 07, 2008 @ 09:03 AM

Hey Cubs, let’s get some runs.

Theriot is ‘under the weather”

hey, so am I. We’re blood brothers.

42. Harry Pavlidis — Sep 07, 2008 @ 09:03 AM

Theriot must’ve had some of that famous Cincy chili - he’s “under the weather”

43. HORNY GOAT — Sep 07, 2008 @ 09:05 AM

that famous Cincy chili

shit, that’s what I had, but it wasn’t from Cincy it was from the health food store.

44. Harry Pavlidis — Sep 07, 2008 @ 09:09 AM

from the health food store.

They just wanted you to come back and spend more money on an herbal remedy for your digestive ails.

48. — Sep 07, 2008 @ 09:18 AM

WTF is that headgear Dusty has on?

49. — Sep 07, 2008 @ 09:21 AM

Derrek Lee tries to hit into another double play; unfortunately, it just so happens that there were already two outs. I wonder how many of those he has.

50. HORNY GOAT — Sep 07, 2008 @ 09:26 AM

Oh Cotts you moron!

%&*$%*&%&^ Cedeno!

77. — Sep 07, 2008 @ 10:38 AM

i found a site that lets you stream the niner game for free ryno

78. — Sep 07, 2008 @ 11:00 AM

They ruled Cedeno’s fuck up a hit and not an error. That is absolute bullshit. That was 100 percent an error. maybe he wouldn’t have got the guy at first, but he should have had that ball. For fuck’s sake, Ryan Theriot of all people would have made that play. That’s a sure sign its an error.

79. — Sep 07, 2008 @ 11:01 AM

Also, Woody was out of line at the end. There is no such thing as excessive celebration of a walk off hit. ever.

80. — Sep 07, 2008 @ 11:06 AM

Eh, I partially blame Lou for this. 2 outings for Wood in 10+ days?

No wonder he’s rusty.

81. — Sep 07, 2008 @ 11:07 AM

that was an error. there is no way in hell that should be a hit

also- kerry wood isnt a monk, he is a guy who will get a little heated on the mound so im not that upset he didnt like that

82. — Sep 07, 2008 @ 11:12 AM

despite this tough loss our magic # is lower and the Brews lose a game in the WC standings

i’ll take it

83. — Sep 07, 2008 @ 11:12 AM

also- kerry wood isnt a monk, he is a guy who will get a little heated on the mound so im not that upset he didnt like that

Agreed. I’m sure he’ll admit later that it had more to do with being upset with how he had been pitching more than anything else.

Sheesh, what a downer to the end of the season this past week or so has been. Suddenly, I’m not looking forward to the postseason as much.

84. — Sep 07, 2008 @ 11:15 AM

also- kerry wood isnt a monk, he is a guy who will get a little heated on the mound so im not that upset he didnt like that

Agreed. I don’t mind what he did, I’m just saying that Cabrera or whoever it was didn’t do anything wrong and Wood should have let it go. Either way, I really hope they get back to playing well soon because this shit is getting old fast.

85. — Sep 07, 2008 @ 11:24 AM

just look at it this way- we know the team isnt this bad and during the worst run all season long we have lost 1 game in the standings

86. — Sep 07, 2008 @ 12:37 PM

Here’s the play by play text from ESPN on Cedeno’s blowing of a double-play ball up the middle:

9th   C Dickerson doubled to shortstop, J Bruce and R Hanigan scored, W Castillo to third.

Maybe MLB should get full-time professional scorers for the games?

87. ccd — Sep 07, 2008 @ 01:45 PM

Ronny being Ronny

No fucking secret here: he’s a bad ballplayer, has been for a long time.

88. HORNY GOAT — Sep 07, 2008 @ 01:48 PM

I only saw the last play twice. Live, and 1 replay, and I was livid. Perhaps there was a bad hop. It looked tailor-made. I don’t know. It still sucks.

Meanwhile, old man Nomar just made a great diving stop with tying runners on for the third out and LA swept AZ to go up 1.5 games.

89. HORNY GOAT — Sep 07, 2008 @ 01:52 PM

what to watch tonight? Phillies-Mets or Bears-Colts? hmmm. I guess the Bears for the first half and baseball rest of the night. for me at least.

90. HORNY GOAT — Sep 07, 2008 @ 01:54 PM

I haven’t seen Nomar that pumped up in a while. That stab of the line drive at 1B could’ve tied the game in the 9th, but it ended it instead.

91. ccd — Sep 07, 2008 @ 01:56 PM

what to watch tonightPhillies-Mets or Bears-Colts

I’ve gotta give the Bears a shot because it’s the opener. Once they go down 14, I’m probably gonna go Mets/Phils.

92. ccd — Sep 07, 2008 @ 01:57 PM

LA swept AZ to go up 1.5 games.

That really changes the dynamics of the playoffs. I’ve been focusing on the D-backs since the start of the season, but their is a real good chance the Cubs will face the Dodgers.

93. HORNY GOAT — Sep 07, 2008 @ 02:05 PM

I wish the Cubs would’ve signed Derek Lowe 4 years ago, and Tejada 5 years ago, and…

94. — Sep 07, 2008 @ 02:07 PM

Did they really call that a double? What a disgrace.

95. Harry Pavlidis — Sep 07, 2008 @ 02:12 PM

I wish the Cubs would’ve signed Derek Lowe 4 years ago,

I hope they go after Lowe this year, but a long term deal may be tough to stomach.

15. HORNY GOAT — Sep 07, 2008 @ 12:46 PM

I guarantee Al will mention it in his re-cap. If Kosuke would’ve been out there…

on cue:

Oh, and another thing. Can we end the Hoffpauir-in-the-outfield experiment? On the Reds’ first run, scored on a fly ball to Hoffpauir, he made a valiant effort, but the throw was way off. If Kosuke Fukudome is in RF, maybe the Reds don’t even run on his arm. That makes the 9th inning very different. Yes, Dome looked bad striking out in the top of the 9th and the look on Lou’s face spoke volumes afterward—I’m guessing you won’t see him in the lineup anytime soon—but there is value to his defense.—Captain Care Bear in a 3:34 post at BTI

How is that for prognostication. You’re a regular Nostradamus HG.

97. HORNY GOAT — Sep 07, 2008 @ 04:00 PM

How is that for prognostication. You’re a regular Nostradamus HG.

How about that. what the fuck Al? His throw was “way off”?? that was a strong accurate throw, just wasn’t the right hop Soto could handle. Douchebag! I’ll take Hoffpauir’s bat right now.

Al will defend that signing just like he defended Dusty for 4 years. To the end.

98. HORNY GOAT — Sep 07, 2008 @ 04:04 PM

How ‘bout them Bears? Safe to say I’m not watching Phillies-Mets tonight. I’ll never get over the super bowl a couple years ago but a Bears win tonight would be sweet.

Forte! 100 yards in the first half. He can run. Too bad the Bears don’t have an offensive line. Orton has made some great passes. Same ole unimaginative crap with the offense though. Need to get the ball to Hester more often. Pass it to Forte. Get those guys in the open field more. What a waste of talent.

99. — Sep 07, 2008 @ 04:30 PM

woody blows it huh? saw it on the board at the mariners game, it was a long bottom nine on the big board, never a good sign.

100. — Sep 07, 2008 @ 04:54 PM

Here’s the play by play text from ESPN on Cedeno’s blowing of a double-play ball up the middle:

Not to defend Cedeno but that ball hit the lip of the dirt and grass and skipped on him. Should have been a play that was made but I can see why it surprised him.

101. Maddog — Sep 07, 2008 @ 05:08 PM

Agreed, Cone.  And it didn’t really matter that much anyway since there was no way they were turning 2 on that play with Dickerson running down the line to 1st.  The base hit that won it would have tied it had Cedeno come up with that ball.  Cedeno should have had it.  I’d guess he said the same thing, but it was a shitty hop and Wood couldn’t find the plate to save his life today.

102. — Sep 07, 2008 @ 05:18 PM

Blame Wood inconsistently on the 6 game losing streak and no appearances. Lou needs to realize even when the club goes through rough stages he still needs to keep his relievers sharp. I want to know why Lou isn’t giving Dempster an extra day of rest by pitching Harden then Dempster sure would make the most sense to me.

103. Maddog — Sep 07, 2008 @ 05:19 PM

Lou definitely deserves some blame, but the offense also deserves some blame for putting Lou in the spot where he didn’t use him for that many days.  I thought he should have pitched the 9th on Saturday.

104. — Sep 07, 2008 @ 05:31 PM

yes the offense is to blame. Tough spot to throw your closer into a blowout game even though he needs the work. I agree though he needed the work and what better spot especially with the off day on Mon.

105. Maddog — Sep 07, 2008 @ 05:36 PM

When the offense starts being a little more consistent, we won’t have that problem, but I really thought Woody should have finished the game on Saturday just because he’d gone so many days without pitching.

I agree with what HG said above regarding Hoffpauir and Fukudome.  Hoffpauir can at least hit the ball.  Fukudome flat out fucking sucks on offense.  He’s not even as good as Kaz Matsui at the plate.

106. — Sep 07, 2008 @ 05:41 PM

I think Fukudome is running out of gas. That and not having his family around has to weigh on him. Either way I’m fine with Hoff. getting some starts out there against righties and using Fukudome as a late inning defensive replacement.

107. Maddog — Sep 07, 2008 @ 05:44 PM

Exactly.  Fukudome’s value is on defense.  He should come to the plate as less often as possible.  To be honest, I don’t think the guy should ever be allowed to bat.  He’s the worst player on the team and he’s going to get over 500 plate appearances.  Continuing to play him is even more silly than Dusty Baker sticking with Ronny Cedeno in 2006.  At least with Cedeno you had the slim chance that he would improve since he was young.
