Sources say Orioles could be 3rd team involved for Peavy talks

Kevin Towers has made it known for awhile now that the Cubs will have to get another team involved if they want to acquire Jake Peavy.  The problem with his comment is that the Padres have to trade Peavy and it appears Peavy, at least at this point, is only willing to be traded to the Cubs.  Anyway, sources now say the Orioles could be the 3rd team as they are looking at Felix Pie once again.

The Orioles have revisited trade talks with the Chicago Cubs about multi-tool outfielder Felix Pie, according to industry sources, and could end up as the third team in a three-way deal that would send marquee right-hander Jake Peavy from the San Diego Padres to Chicago.

Pie, once considered one of the better young prospects in the game, was an Orioles’ target at this time last year when the two teams discussed a deal involving two-time All-Star second baseman Brian Roberts.

Sources said that the Cubs are looking for a young pitcher in return with one possible scenario being the Orioles sending starter Garrett Olson to Chicago, who then could trade the left-hander to the Padres as part of a package for Peavy. Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail is reluctant to trade his young pitching, but the Orioles have long been enamored by Pie’s potential and tools.

So no matter what anyone says, the Cubs are interested in Jake Peavy and are interested enough to be seeking other teams to bring into the deal.  I have no idea if one will get done, but you’d have to be retarded to think the Cubs aren’t interested.

I’m hoping the Cubs end up trading Pie, Theriot and Marshall and get Peavy, Greene, Adam Jones, Nick Markakis and Rafael Palmeiro.

I’d like to keep Marshall.  Pie, Theriot, and Marquis for Peavy, Greene, Jones, Markakis, Giles, and prospects.

Am I the only one that is worried about this moving at a ridiculously slow pace because of Andy MacPhail?

Nick Markakis would make tons of sense if the Cubs were to somehow roofie Andy McPhail.

OK, so the next logical question, to test your Marshall affinity, is:  Would you trade him straight up for Rafael Palmeiro?

Think about it.

In all seriousness, if he won’t sign an extension (he will), they could move him.

This calls for a trip to O’s Hangout!

Wow, it’s been almost a year and nothing has changed at O’s Hangout. Handy Andy never gets enough in any of these deals.

Honestly the O’s could get Ruth and Gehrig in their prime in a deal and it wouldn’t be enough. These people are unreal.

I don’t want to be the third team and give up good young pitching.

Then Olson will be fine, right?

(dying laughing). You took the words out of my mouth Harry. I just looked at your post over at Cubsf/x.I was trying to figure out why the O’s fans are upset with this.

Olson isn’t too bad.  sub 3.00 ERA in the minors, but as HP’s post shows, he’s got underwhelming stuff.  That being said, he could probably post a 1.81 ERA at PETCO.  Then again, so could I.

O’s Hangout is delusional.  Nutty bastards over there.

The sad thing is that you could come up with a trade proposal that sends the Orioles Pujols, Lincecum, and Hanley Ramirez for Brian Roberts and they’d say it’s not enough.

Strange birds over there…

Strange doesn’t cover it, ccd.

I just hope a deal for Peavy gets done so one of the less faithful on BCB will say “I’ll resist the urge to say ‘I told you so.’”

I have faith MacFailure will falter again and make the Cubs and/or Padres look like frat boys after a good party.

That said for the love of christ Jim, get rid of Marquis. I’ve heard the argument of him being your prototypical fifth starter, and he is. He’s on par with what a fifth starter should be, I simply don’t like the fucker. Jason Marquis is ‘negro players’ to my Al Yellon.

I’m sure he could find a way to screw it all up, but I do think this is different than last year.  He’ll be trading a young pitcher or so, which is much different than trading away the face of the organization.  Especially when that face is as overrated as he is.

So this peavy deal could very well be taking some time because Hendry probably wants to try to obtain one of Giles/Scott/Huff and Roberts in the same mega-deal.  That’d be quite the haul in one take and the Padres might be willing to take Olson, Vitters and another pitcher

22. MB21 (view all comments) — Nov 30, 2008 @ 10:33 AM

It might be because of that, JMan, but I’m guessing that Hendry really does need to wait until December 1st when he knows who the new owner is likely to be.  I think there’s a freeze on what he can do at this point and can’t do anything until he knows.  I could be wrong, but it makes sense to me.
