People should remember that while they have the right to their opinion, they are not entitled to be taken seriously. -- Bruce Bartlett

The best of Kerry Wood:  May 11, 1998

Posted by MB21 on 11/14/08 at 08:20 AM • 49 Comments

Since there isn’t much to do until the Cubs make another move or two, I thought it might be fun to take a look back at the best games in Kerry Wood’s career with the Cubs.  I’m not sure how many games I’ll do just yet, but there will be at least 5.  The first one happens to be the first regular season game I was able to watch Kerry Wood in person.  It was May 11, 1998 in Phoenix

We all remember the start before that, but this was an historic start for Kerry Wood as well.  On this night Wood struck out 13 batters in 7 innings and set a major league record for most strikeouts in 2 consecutive games.  I’m not sure if that record is still his, but he passed Nolan Ryan that night.  He was well on his way to becoming the fastest MLB pitchers to reach 1000 strikeouts.

I lived in the Phoenix area at this time and had gone to see Wood pitch in Spring Training that year.  I still recall that first time I saw him pitch and you just knew he was going to be a star.  He was a young phenom with a 99 mph fastball and a knee buckling curve.  He didn’t have the best idea where either pitch was going all the time, but with that arsenal he didn’t have to.  I remember after the Cubs sent Wood to Iowa in 1998 that one of the analysts on Baseball Tonight said the Cubs would win the World Series “if they have 5 starters better than Kerry Wood.”

On May 11, 1998 Kerry Wood threw 7 innings, allowed 5 hits and only 1 run while walking one and striking 13 men out.  This was a great performance from a rookie making only his 6th start, but it was kind of a letdown for those in attendance.  Many of the 47,129 that attended the game to watch the new expansion team in their brand new park were there to see Kerry Wood strikeout 20 again.  It obviously didn’t happen and while his performance this night was dominating, it wasn’t the same as the one a week earlier.

Mark Grace hit a home run in the top of the 1st inning.  The Cubs added a couple of runs in the 2nd and led 3-0.  This was before Sammy Sosa appeared to be on track to pass Maris.  Sosa hit 20 home runs that June to add to his 13 in April and May.

Below is the full box score and play by play taken from Retrosheet.

Sad to see FJM go, but at least they’re leaving the archives up.

Dempster could get a ton of money this offseason if he wanted to.  Teams always overvalue last season’s stats and =2]Dempster was 4th in MLB with 112 Pitching Runs Created.  Then consider he threw 21.1 fewer innings than Hamels who was 3rd and at 113, and he was one of the 3 best pitchers in all of baseball according to PRC.

Yeah, but he was first in Shitting The Bed.

Please tell me that one of you fuckers watches It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The gang storming the house and the taco bed cracked me up.

What does a little Mexican girl want more than anything?
Tacos?
That’s right. Tacos.

Coincidentally, I nominate this for the ACB theme music.

ill be happier if we do well with wood (ie make the playoffs and win 97 games) than winning the WS without Wood.

Wood’s my favorite player too. He’s been that for more than 10 years. That said, I don’t care if a Cubs team full of terrorists wins the World Series against a team of my children (well, as long as my kids win a World Series at some point). Some people just take the Cubs too seriously…

Al wonders if Fukudome could be a legitimate presence in the lineup from the left side of the plate.

9. Jame Gumb ® (view all comments) — Nov 14, 2008 @ 10:56 AM

Both Jim Hendry and Lou Piniella have made no secret that they’re going to move Kosuke Fukudome to CF, platooning him with Reed Johnson, and look for a lefthanded bat to play RF.

But what if they think outside the box just a little? Yesterday, the Tribune reported that Kenny Williams is scouting the Arizona Fall League for prospects he might want in dealing Jermaine Dye away.
—Al

(dying laughing) Thinking outside the box = trading for a righty instead of a lefty. Sorry, Al, but that’s still in the box.

I’ve never understood this emotional fandom stuff.  Wood has been one of my favorite players for awhile too.  So was Maddux.  I just watched a lot of Braves games and was over Maddux not being a Cub in about 3 minutes.  It’s a business.  It happens.  I don’t care who is on the team.  I don’t care what kind of person they are.  Just win.

I think we’re going to trade for Matt Cain, trade him and prospects to Florida for Nolasco and then trade Nolasco, Harden, Marmol and prospects to the White Sox for Dye.

Yeah, it sucks. It’s not like he’s dead, though. In fact, there’s a very real chance he plays half his games about 15 minutes from my house.

If you read down in the comments to this article you’ll see Colin Wyers comments about a projected ERA for Wood (4.26) and for Gregg (4.31).  I’m really puzzles by the people who are complaining about this deal.  Gregg isn’t quite as good as Wood, but he’s much less of a risk and when you factor everything else in it’s an obviously good move for the cubs.  Then again, when good moves are made, people freak out because they like grit, scrappy, and winning ballplayers.

Why would the Cubs want Jermaine Dye, who is 33 and is having the worst year of his career (.214/.271/.402, Pattersonesque numbers)? Ugh.

He adds that trading several other players means the Marlins “are now flexible enough to be choosy.” According to Rosenthal, the Cubs and Rays are among the teams interested in Hermida, who’s a 24-year-old career .267/.342/.436 hitter.

Our focus is on one guy at this point,” Milwaukee general manager Doug Melvin said. “Until we know more about that, we’re not as aggressive in pursuit of other people. We’re putting feelers out there for other people, but only feelers at this point.”

I’m pretty sure no good is going to come out of focusing solely on one player, especially a player you have little or no chance of getting.  That’s about like me focusing all of my time on winning the lottery.

41. MB21 (view all comments) — Nov 14, 2008 @ 01:04 PM

The Brewers’ primary offseason need is starting pitching, followed by left-handed bats and then a bullpen arm or two.

We could eliminate them in 2009 by going after starting pitching, left-handed bats, and bullpen arms.

Oh yeah, that’s the plan.

I do like having young pitchers in contract years, such as Gregg and Harden.  i would think they are more likely to pitch through pain and do whatever they can to make sure they put up some great numbers.

Apparently Dempster has stated he would accept less money from the Cubs if they acquire Peavy.  At this point I’d rather they try to dump Marquis, sign Lowe and bring in Furcal and some other RF.  giles would be the dream but I have a feeling it’d be someone like Luke Scott.

management keeps indicating they want to get younger and more athletic but I just don’t see whom they could acquire that fits the definition.  Maybe I am just missing someone.

If that’s accurate he’ll be a free agent after 2009.
