Cubs lead about to drop to 1 game

Down 5-1 going to the 8th. So far in the 2nd half the Cubs have scored 1, 1, 9, 0, and 1 run. The last one, of course, depends on the last 2 innings of tonight’s game. The Brewers are now 1 out as they beat the Cardinals. They have the easier schedule and 7 of 10 at home against the Cubs. The Cubs have gone from virtual locks to win this division to not being favored to win it. Impressive even by Cubs standards.

Of the 8 hits the Cubs have against Petit, Soriano has 4 of them in 6 at-bats. He also has 3 of the 4 doubles. Lee is 1-2 with a home run. Marquis has pitched really well against the Diamondbacks and only Chris Young has done anything against him as he’s 3-6 with 3 home runs. This is kind of a must-win game. The Cubs have to start winning games on the road and a loss tonight ensures a 2-4 road trip, at best, and that assumes a win tomorrow night.

Cubs trying to throw it all away

5 and 6 games leads over the Cardinals and Brewers less than 10 games ago has been reduced to 2 apiece as the Cubs continue to suck since the All-Star break. It’s awfully easy to imagine the Cubs being tied for first with the Cardinals or Brewers after Wednesday’s games. That’s hard to imagine considering the kind of lead they had not that long ago. It’s so Cubs-like.

Jim Edmonds has slugged .560 against Johnson in his career. Ramirez and Lee are a combined 7-39 against him. Reed Johnson is 5-12 so we’re likely to see an outfield of Johnson, Edmonds and DeRosa. Only 2 Dbacks have faced Harden. Tony Clark is 1-3 and Orlando Hudson is 2-8.

Wood most likely to the DL, Marmol to pitch the 9th

It sounds like the Cubs will put Wood on the DL soon, probably tomorrow, and I can’t help but wonder why it wasn’t done sooner, but whatever. The scary part about Wood going to the DL is that Carlos Marmol will pitch the 9th if the Cubs have a lead. That’s risky. Big time. Lou either thinks Marmol has figured it out (I hope so!!!) or he’s mentally ill.

Just needed a new thread. The Cubs won their first game of the 2nd half by winning the finale in Houston 9-0. Dempster was excellent once again. 8 innings, 0 runs.

2 runs in 18 innings, 2 losses of course as the Cubs try to piss away the division. Pretty good job so far as St. Louis is only 2 out and Milwaukee is 3 out.

Carlos Zambrano vs. Astros hitters: .228/.324/.397 in 219 at-bats

Derrek Lee and Ryan Theriot have hit Rodriguez well. Carlos Lee has given Zambrano problems. He’s got 9 extra base hits against him including 4 home runs. Berkman also has 4 home runs against Zambrano, but he’s done relatively little against him.

Cubs lose in 9th

Just a couple of things. Lilly pitched a very good game. Fukudome needs to be moved down to the 8th spot in the order. He is not good at baseball. Zambrano’s offensive VORP is almost equal to Fukudome’s in 330 fewer plate appearances. Brian Moehler pitched around Ryan fucking Theriot with a runner on 2nd to face Fukudome. Very good defender, but sucks ass at the plate.

The Cubs begin the “2nd half” with a 4-game lead tonight. They’ve hit Moehler really well. Edmonds has hit 5 home runs against him. Mark Loretta has a couple home runs against Lilly and is about the only Astros hitter to have any success against him.
